Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cleopatre

Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, originally titled Astérix & Obélix: Mission Cléopâtre, is a 2002 french film based on the comic book "Astérix et Cléopatre" written by René Goscinny and drawn by Albert Uderzo.

The film was directed by Alain Chabat and starred Gerard Depardieu, Christian Clavier and Monica Bellucci. It sold 14 557 020 tickets in France.

My favorite character was Jules César because of his intelligence, his military skills and his humoristic appearances along the movie. He, along the movie, also revealed being an opportunist, wise and life-experienced man. I conclude this due to many sentences that he says along the movie: “Alea jacta est” , “Veni, vidi, vinci” and “Civis pacem parabellum”.
I didn´t identify with Amonbofis because he is a calculist man that only cares about money and power.

The movie relies on layers of cultural jokes, many of them from the original graphic novels by Goscinny and Uderzo. Besides those jokes, more were added by the screenwriters, including many references to current popular culture: César’s military commander, Caius Suplicius, parodies Darth Vader and three workers parodied the rock band ZZ Top. Some jokes require aknowledge of French society, habits, etc. while others make use of the historical setting for humorous effect.

My favorite part of the story was when Astérix, Obélix and Panoramix escaped from Cleopatra’s prison. It happened this way:

«Obélix says to the prison guard (that is sat right in front of the door):
“Get out of there. We´re goin’ out.”
The prison guard thinks he is bluffing and aswers ironically:
“Yes, right. By the way, when you return could you bring me a pack of …”
BANG!!!!! Obélix kicks the door and it smashes the prison guard. Obélix says:
“This Egyptians are crazy!! We tell them go out and they stay in the same place!”»

I also loved it when Obélix broke the sphinx nose. I wouldn’t like to change the story in anyway.

I disliked it when the movie ended. WHAT A SHAME!!!
